GPC releases statement supporting Ban Ki Moon’s call for a ceasefire

Background: The General People’s Congress (GPC) is former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party, and was Yemen’s ruling party from unification of North and South until 2011 when transition was made and Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi was appointed interim President. GPC and Saleh are currently fighting on the Houthis’ side in the Civil War, both of which are the target of Saudi Arabia’s air campaign “Decisive Storm”, which has been ongoing for several weeks.

Former President Saleh, still residing in Yemen and fighting current President Hadi who has the backing of Saudi Arabia.

The formerly ruling General People’s Congress (GPC) welcomed UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon’s call for a ceasefire on all sides and returning to dialogue under the supervision of the UN, also calling on all fighting parties inside and outside Yemen to answer this call.

The GPC, which is led by former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in a statement released today recognised the call of the UN Secretary, saying that “it is a progressive step for the countries of the world, and foremost the UN Security Council, to take their historical and humanitarian responsibility for what is happening in Yemen.”

The statement is as follows:

“The General People’s Congress welcomes the steadfastness and tenacity of Yemen’s peoplein the face of war in Yemen, and the air, naval, and land blockade that has been enforced upon it.

We stress the need to end the Yemeni bloodletting. The party will work positively with UN Security Council Resolution 2216; helping the preserving the achievements of the Homeland, and the people. We also welcome the UN Secretary General’s call for a ceasefire on all sides and returning to dialogue under the supervision of the UN.

The General People’s Congress calls for all conflicting parties inside and outwit to answer the call of the UN Secretary General. The GPC sees this as a progressive step for the countries of the world, and foremost the UN Security Council, to take their historical and humanitarian responsibility for what is happening in Yemen.

The GPC prays for mercy upon the souls of the martyrs and wishes the swift recovery of wounded.
