Eighty five peaceful Syrian groups launched the “Planet Syria” campaign, to discuss with the world to extend the hand of relief to Syria to stop the pool of blood that is being filled everyday in Syria through the use of barrels bombs. The 85 groups expressed that their two demands are the end of barrel bombs and encouraging this through a political solution.

AFP reported the groups’ press statement that includes, according to AFP, the Syrian Network for Human Rights, and the Violations Documentation Centre in Syria, and Women’s, Assyrian, Kurdish, media, and rights organisations, and six other groups that did not want their names known for security reasons.

The statement clarified that signatory groups are located in areas under the control of a number of parties “from Dera’a and Al-Ghouta [outside Damascus] in the south to Aleppo and Al-Hasakah in the north”, and is “working with local groups on issues like education, livelihood, and civil protection”, lastly “documenting human rights violations and engaging in creating peace”, representing 17.000 Syrians.

The statement expressed to journalists that there are “two steps that the international community need to implement in order to create peace. The first is stopping use of barrels bombs, and even if a no-fly zone needs to be enforced, the second is to support Syrian peace talks that include all parties, without exception or exclusion”.

The statement sees a connection between the “continued dropping of barrel bombs in Syria, and the appearance of Da’ish and its success”, using one of the many names for the Islamic State group. Hayid Hayid [neutrality, neutrality], one of the organizations in the campaign, said that “all barrel bombs increase ISIS’ power, and all support extremists in Syria receive is directly connected with serious human rights violations by the Al-Asad regime”.

syriahr.comThe campaign statement also repeated “we call our friends all over the world to support us in this campaign to stop the violence and extremism that has come out of control. In order for us to realize this goal, we need for the bombs of death to stop, and for serious peace talks to to start. We need to realize these goals, together … now.”

The statement also said that pacifism is shared in “Planet Syria” campaign organization, saying that

“we feel great frustration in ourselves for lacking a minimum of support from our friends all over the world. The idea is not complicated at all. The absolute majority of Syrians do not want a dictatorship, nor violence.

Ala Ramadan, one of the organisers, clarified the name of “Planet Syria”-campaign [we named it this] because “we feel sometimes as if we are on a different planet!”, and “because our peaceful revolution changed into a worsening international war, with at least 80 countries fueling it.”

Amman – A delegation of seven UN organisations will be visiting Jordan at the end of this April; the UN Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS), UNICEF, UN Women, World Food Program (WFP), according to a press statement made by the delegation.

This visit comes while estimates of 1.4 million Syrian refugee arriving in Jordan have been made. It will consult with the Jordanian Government on ways to support the country to realise sustainable development, and to deal with the challenges, most important of which is the Syrian refugee crisis.

The statement noted that the visit aims to increase understanding of the members of the Executive Council for the UN agencies that are providing assistance to Jordan, in efforts of development and facing current challenges.

The statement said that “In light of the importance of keeping the developmental gains that have been realised in Jordan, and the dealing with the effects of the Syrian Crisis, the UN Country Team in Jordan, have created a UN Assistance Frame (UNAF) work for the country and to cover the period between 2015 and 2017″.

The framework, which is a strategic document more-so than a working document that focuses on overall consequences, and acts as a shared strategic framework, enabling the UN organisation, answering the particular national needs and priorities, ensures a comprehensive, consistent, and homogenous process.

The framework will continue supporting implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, especially as the final date is 2015. At the same time, the framework provides flexibility that enables solving emerging priorities though the list of development goals after 2015, according to the statement.

The statement pointed to “As the Syrian Crisis enters into its fifth year, Jordan faces large humanitarian and developmental challenges, and is currently hosting 1.4 million Syrians, of which 640.000 Syrian refugees registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 85% of which live in host communities, and 70% are made up of women and children.”

The statement considered that the needs of refugees have affected Jordan widely, while pointing to the estimates that the monetary cost of the Syrian Crisis is 2.09 billion US Dollars, according to the “Syria 2015 Response Plan” (http://reliefweb.int/report/syrian-arab-republic/2015-strategic-response-plan-syrian-arab-republic).

The six organisations work side by side with other UN agencies in support of the Jordanian government, as well as the international community in response to the Syrian Crisis.

The organisations support the efforts aiming to develop the ability and systems of central services in host communities in Jordan to deal with the effects of this Crisis through developmental programs.

The statement pointed out the flexible strategic change so as to create the foundations of a plan that has been launched recently in Jordan called “2015 Jordanian Response Plant to the Syrian Crisis”, with the goal of responding to developmentally and humanitarily through one single national framework.

The executive council will meet with representatives from the Government, the two UN Country Teams in Jordan, throughout their visit, working on the humanitarian response, the donor community, NGOs, private sector establishments, and civil society.

It has also pledged to make a plan for the humanitarian aid that has been requested in Yemen, as well as putting down the necessary framework to start reconstruction and rehabilitation as soon as the security is restored.

The pledge was made in a meeting between the president of the bank with the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, the governor of the IDB in Yemen Muhammad Al-Maytami, during yearly meetings of Arab monetary institutions, recently held in Kuwait .

The two sides signed an agreement whereby the IDB provides 50 million US dollars, to support the efforts to rehabilitate and employ Yemeni youths, in a youth employment program that the IDB has initiated, and to which it has allocated the sum of 250 million USD, to help members of the Arab League. The IDB financing in Yemen included several sectors, most of which focus on, in particular, the agricultural, power, transport and education sectors.

The IDB also cooperated with the World Bank and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union, to create a a social and economic evaluation of Yemen, which was the main document upon which the financing plan for the interim program for stabilisation and development (2012-14) was based.

Saudi Ambassador Al-Jubayr: We do not want another Hezbollah in Yemen .. Ground troops will be sent if situation demand it

By Al-Yawm, originally published 4 April 2015.

The Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel Al-Jubayr said that the decision to send ground troops to Yemen is subject to discussion, and green light may be given if conditions so demand. The statements were made as Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Yassin called for the creation of safe zones in Aden in order to provide humanitarian assistance to its residents. In a conference about the Yemeni crisis, which was held in the US Senate, Al-Jubayr denied the presence of Saudi troops in Aden. He explained that the possibility of a troop deployment is still a possibility if the situation changed in a way that would demand their deployment, adding that “use of ground forces has already been discussed, and the decision will be only be taken under certain conditions.”

Al-JubayrAl-Jubayr criticised the deposed Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, emphasising that he should not play any role in the future of the country. Al-Jubayr said that “[Saleh] is currently playing a negative and extremely destructive role in Yemen, through his alliance with the Houthis, using his influence on the Yemeni army’s leadership to support them”, adding “the Houthis could not have advanced from Sana’a to Ta’az to Aden without the explicit and direct support from the previous president.”

Al-Jubayr also stated that “In Lebanon Hezbollah controls the state. We do not want anything like this top happen in Yemen, which it would with Houthi control. What the Houthis have done in Yemen is acts of terrorism. They have terrorised the Yemeni population and taken power. The Houthi ideology is clear and it will not have a positive effect on Yemen”, adding “Iran and Hezbollah are turning this conflict into one of sectarianism, that it is a Sunni-Shia conflict. We do not agree with this accusation. Rather, this is a battle of good against evil, not between Sunnis and Shias.”

Safe zones

The Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs, Riyad Yassin, called for the creation of safe zones in the Aden, to provide humanitarian aid to residents in the city, at the same time battles between Peoples’ committees [armed groups loyal to president-in-Exile Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi] on one side, and Huthi militias and forces belonging to deposed president Saleh on the other, are raging and have intensified.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera Foreign Minister Yasin confirmed the lack of any political communication with the Houthis or Saleh, saying they have “declared war on all Yemenis. I think that this, with developments over the last few days everyone has come to understand both both the danger of cooperating with them in any future political reconciliation and their future presence in Yemen.
